Steven Spielberg's Disclosure Day has moved from theaters to home viewing, arriving on premium video-on-demand from July 21, available to rent through Apple TV, Fandango at Home and YouTube Movies & TV.
The film closed its theatrical run having earned $232.9 million worldwide against a combined production and marketing spend of roughly $195 million, a soft result set against Spielberg's track record. For anyone who skipped the multiplex, this is the first chance to watch it at home, and the digital rental window arrives well before any subscription streaming date has been confirmed.
The film follows cybersecurity expert Daniel Kellner (Josh O'Connor), who goes on the run after uncovering government files confirming extraterrestrial contact, and forms an uneasy alliance with television meteorologist Margaret Fairchild (Emily Blunt) as they try to force a global disclosure despite official efforts to bury it, led by Colin Firth's character. Spielberg directs from a screenplay by longtime collaborator David Koepp, working from Spielberg's own original story, marking their fifth project together after Jurassic Park, The Lost World, War of the Worlds and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Colman Domingo and Eve Hewson round out the principal cast.
The film is Spielberg in a classic sci-fi register: John Williams' score and Blunt's performance carry a spellbinding sense of scale, and O'Connor gives Kellner real conviction while Domingo elevates every scene he's in. The alien design leans too close to Close Encounters and edges toward cheesy at points, and the final act loses some of its grip, but the film holds an 80 percent fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes.
This is a fit for viewers who want old-fashioned Spielbergian spectacle: a human-scaled story about ordinary people caught in an extraordinary event, built around movie stars rather than franchise mechanics. It rewards anyone who grew up on E.T. or Close Encounters and wants to see the same director revisit that register with a new cast, and it suits a couple or family night in rather than a background watch.
