New this week: Supergirl leads a busy week of releases for 21 June

A busy week for cinema. Supergirl leads the new releases, with Dear You, Power Ballad, The Invite, and Jackass: Best and Last all arriving before the weekend.

Supergirl is the headline. The second film in James Gunn and Peter Safran's rebooted DC Universe, it sends Kara Zor-El on an interstellar journey of vengeance after an adversary strikes close to home. Milly Alcock takes the title role, directed by Craig Gillespie, who made I, Tonya and Cruella. Jason Momoa appears as Lobo supporting Kara on her quest. It opens Friday 26 June.

Gillespie's instinct is for character over spectacle, and the premise here gives him space to work in. Kara is a younger hero still finding her footing, and the film leans into that rather than skipping past it.

Also in cinemas Friday: Dear You, a Chinese family drama. A grandmother's quiet life is upended when her grandson discovers that the man she has exchanged love letters with for fifty years is a stranger. Director Lan Hongchun made the film with genuine warmth for its characters, and it shows.

Power Ballad starts streaming from Tuesday 23 June. A wedding singer and a fading pop star cross paths when one of the singer's songs becomes the hit that reignites the star's career. A premise that sounds familiar but has something warmer underneath it. Paul Rudd and Nick Jonas lead Power Ballad and bring us the duo we didn't know we needed.

The Invite (a dinner party that spirals into something else entirely) and Jackass: Best and Last (billed as the final chapter of the franchise) both open Friday.

A week with something for most moods: superhero spectacle, family drama, a music comedy with a sentimental streak, and the purported last ride of a franchise that has been going for 25 years.
